An expressive conductor and versatile artistic personality, Daniel Huppert combines a wealth of musical skills with stylistic clarity and artistic depth.

Since 2019, he has served as General Music Director of the Bergische Symphoniker. In addition, he has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Zuger Sinfonietta in Switzerland for nine years. From 2012 to 2020, Daniel Huppert was General Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin as well as the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater, one of Germany’s traditional cultural institutions.


He began his international career as Assistant du Chef d’Orchestre at the Opéra National de Paris (Bastille). Known as an open-minded and stylish artist, Daniel Huppert has established an outstanding reputation both in the symphonic repertoire and in music theatre. He is a highly sought-after guest conductor at leading opera houses, including the Komische Oper Berlin, Leipzig Opera, and the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz Munich.


His collaborations with orchestras include the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Darmstadt State Orchestra, Magdeburg Philharmonic, Cottbus Philharmonic Orchestra, Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra, Anhalt Philharmonic Dessau, Münster Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Austrian ensemble for new music.


Under Daniel Huppert’s musical direction, numerous opera productions have received high critical acclaim, including Der Rosenkavalier, Salome, Madama Butterfly, Rusalka, La bohème, La traviata, Tosca, Otello, and Peter Grimes.


Throughout his career, he has also distinguished himself as a prizewinner in several international conducting competitions, among them the Witold Lutosławski Conducting Competition (Poland), the German Operetta Prize for Young Conductors at the Leipzig Opera, and the Conductors’ Competition of the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig.


Daniel Huppert studied cello, conducting, musicology, and German philology in Saarbrücken and Weimar. He was a scholarship holder of the Conductors’ Forum of the German Music Council (Deutscher Musikrat).

With the 2023/24 season, Daniel Huppert launched a new subscription series as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Zuger Sinfonietta, presenting four top-class concerts at the Theater Casino Zug. Together with the subscription series initiated in 2016 at the Lorzensaal Cham, the Zuger Sinfonietta records more than 500 subscriptions for the 2025/26 season.

Huppert lets the orchestra breathe. He does not control the music — he allows it to unfold out of silence. This creates magical spaces and wide soundscapes of crystalline clarity. An almost meditative atmosphere sets the tone. Dvořák's complex score receives a noble resonance under Huppert's direction. The dance passages never sound clumsy; virtuosity never loses its elegance. (…) After the final movement, Huppert took a deep breath and guided the orchestra with gentle and clear gestures. Huppert and the Symphoniker — it simply feels like a perfect match.

In the end, stomping feet, shouts of 'bravo,' and more and more listeners rising for standing ovations: The debut of the new General Music Director (GMD) Daniel Huppert in the main concert hall could not have been more successful. (…) Conductor and orchestra acted together naturally and harmoniously. Clear gestures from the podium created an optimal unity that thrilled the audience and inspired the musicians. With great enthusiasm, they presented the elegiac, slightly misty romantic mood of early Wagner, in which fanfares, sighing violins, and thundering timpani all found their place. In sensitive dialogue with pianist Alexander Krichel, the orchestra then performed Beethoven's earliest piano concerto.

The outstanding feature of this open-air performance of La traviata was the musical realization by the Mecklenburg State Orchestra under its General Music Director Daniel Huppert. Huppert developed all the nuances of Verdi's score with exemplary sensitivity, allowing the singers freedom and space while at the same time revealing the diversity of the music with fine differentiation. (…) The orchestra's sound was consistently captivating throughout the evening. At the end, Huppert received the greatest applause.

Under its General Music Director Daniel Huppert, the Mecklenburg State Orchestra is experiencing clear artistic growth whose results are becoming increasingly audible. (…) In the second half of the program, Huppert conducted Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major. With the same musical ductus as earlier, he presented the work with finely carved inner architecture, carefully developed and of chamber-music clarity. He rendered the great tutti climaxes in a warm, full sound without the heavy brass armor with which Bruckner is often overloaded. Instead, he unfolded the composer's rich polyphony so that both the development of thematic strands and the subtle intertwining of motifs became clearly perceptible. The result of this remarkable balance was a fascinating interpretation of Bruckner.

The evening concluded with conductor Daniel Huppert and the State Orchestra. The young GMD possesses a keen instinct for Mozart and for the parlando style of Le nozze di Figaro. Although he sometimes draws the Allegro con spirito tempo toward Allegro assai (as in the overture), the music-making — at once generously unpretentious and melodically lingering — strikes at the heart of the work. Because the small orchestra in the pit performs with enthusiasm, flexibility, and precision, the result is a refined and enjoyable performance. Such artistic quality is a valuable asset for the traditionally beautiful state theatre, especially in difficult times.
