ABOUT
An expressive conductor and versatile artistic personality, Daniel Huppert combines a wealth of musical skills with stylistic clarity and artistic depth.
Since 2019, he has served as General Music Director of the Bergische Symphoniker. In addition, he has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Zuger Sinfonietta in Switzerland for nine years. From 2012 to 2020, Daniel Huppert was General Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin as well as the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater, one of Germany’s traditional cultural institutions.
He began his international career as Assistant du Chef d’Orchestre at the Opéra National de Paris (Bastille). Known as an open-minded and stylish artist, Daniel Huppert has established an outstanding reputation both in the symphonic repertoire and in music theatre. He is a highly sought-after guest conductor at leading opera houses, including the Komische Oper Berlin, Leipzig Opera, and the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz Munich.
His collaborations with orchestras include the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Darmstadt State Orchestra, Magdeburg Philharmonic, Cottbus Philharmonic Orchestra, Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra, Anhalt Philharmonic Dessau, Münster Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Austrian ensemble for new music.
Under Daniel Huppert’s musical direction, numerous opera productions have received high critical acclaim, including Der Rosenkavalier, Salome, Madama Butterfly, Rusalka, La bohème, La traviata, Tosca, Otello, and Peter Grimes.
Throughout his career, he has also distinguished himself as a prizewinner in several international conducting competitions, among them the Witold Lutosławski Conducting Competition (Poland), the German Operetta Prize for Young Conductors at the Leipzig Opera, and the Conductors’ Competition of the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig.
Daniel Huppert studied cello, conducting, musicology, and German philology in Saarbrücken and Weimar. He was a scholarship holder of the Conductors’ Forum of the German Music Council (Deutscher Musikrat).
With the 2023/24 season, Daniel Huppert launched a new subscription series as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Zuger Sinfonietta, presenting four top-class concerts at the Theater Casino Zug. Together with the subscription series initiated in 2016 at the Lorzensaal Cham, the Zuger Sinfonietta records more than 500 subscriptions for the 2025/26 season.
